Fergie hopeful on Ferdinand

Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that Rio Ferdinand will be fit for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League final after missing Manchester United's 1-0 win over Hull City on the last day of the season. The Premier League champions came into Sunday's fixture fielding a weakened starting XI, but still ran out winners at the KC Stadium thanks to Darron Gibson's first-half strike. And Ferguson was pleased with the his young Red Devils. He told Sky Sports: "They had some very good moments in the match, maybe they should have won by more but the important thing is they have the experience of playing in a situation where they had to do well and that has pleased me." Despite beating Hull, the Tigers managed to avoid the drop after Newcastle United lost to Aston Villa and Ferguson reserved a vote of sympathy for Alan Shearer's outfit. UnfortunateThe Scot added: "If you turn to where they were in January and you're down in that bottom six it is very difficult to get out of there. "Good teams have gone down in the past - Tottenham and Nottingham Forest - it's unfortunate. "They have fantastic support and a great history and going down it's very disappointing for them." Regarding the Ferdinand situation, Ferguson is confident the United defender will be able to overcome his calf injury. He said: "Well he's been out for three-and-a-half weeks of course and it's not the best situation but he's very lucky he's a natural athlete so that gives us hope."
