Ferguson criticism for Styles

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes his side were forced to overcome a determined Wigan side and the referee in their 2-1 win at the JJB Stadium. The Red Devils moved to within one point of reclaiming their Premier League title as second-half goals from Carlos Tevez and Michael Carrick cancelled out Hugo Rodallega's opener. And Ferguson has poured praise on his reigning European champions for not responding to a perceived lack of assistance from referee Rob Styles on Wednesday night. The United boss feels Cristiano Ronaldo should have been awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when colliding with Maynor Figueroa, and has therefore hailed his side for not become frustrated by the match officials. Determination"They (the players) were fantastic in the second half in terms of their determination, not giving in, just keep going, got a little break and, at the end of the day, we were the better team in the second half," he told Sky Sports 1."The first thing was to keep their discipline. The referee was annoying with some of his decisions. "You can't beat the referee, you have to keep him on your side. So keep your mouth shut and play the game, and I think we have proof there."We had to keep patient. I thought we should have had a penalty kick, but we weren't getting anything tonight.Fantastic"We have done it without any help. We have done it with a fantastic second goal from Michael Carrick and a real gutsy performance."United can now win their third successive league trophy on Saturday lunchtime when a much-maligned Arsenal arrive at Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports. But Ferguson insists he will not allow his squad to lose focus as they attempt to equal Liverpool's record of 18 top-flight titles. "We will approach the game (against Arsenal) the way we always do and try and win the match," he added. "We are against a very good Arsenal side. I don't listen to that criticism. We know how good a side they are. We need to perform on Saturday and hopefully we will do."
