Campbell strikes again

FRAIZER Campbell continued his pre-season goalscoring spree to help Sunderland secure a narrow victory over Leicester City this afternoon. Campbell gave another convincing case for his inclusion as a strike partner for Darren Bent this season when his close range finish from Jordan Henderson's through ball handed the Wearsiders the lead after only six minutes. In the second half Henderson's low strike, fumbled horribly into his own net by Foxes' keeper Chris Weale, cancelled out Andy King's equaliser to give Steve Bruce's side victory. But it will be matters in the Sunderland defensive ranks that will have given the Black Cats boss most food for thought. Titus Bramble made his Sunderland debut alongside Michael Turner but the new centre-back partnership still needs time to gel. The Foxes are only one week away from kicking-off their Championship campaign and Paulo Sousa's side played the better football and gave the visitors plenty of problems. The lively DJ Campbell left Turner and Bramble looking pretty lethargic and Sunderland had Simon Mignolet to thank for keeping Leicester at bay. The Belgian's finger-tip save in the first half and a great reaction save in the dying minutes were the pick of an impressive afternoon's work. His chances of starting in Sunderland's Premier League opener against Birmingham look even more likely after Trevor Carson was sidelined with a suspected shoulder problem. His injury exposed the paucity of cover available to Bruce who called up youngster Ben Wilson to today's squad. Bruce is now expected to step up his efforts to recruit an experienced keeper on loan to cover for Craig Gordon's absence. Attendance: 7,935
