The Magpies finished 19th in the league this season after nine defeats in their last 13 games.
And McParland believes they should have finished far higher.
"It's a small dividing line, it's inches," he told the Nottingham Evening Post. "But the league table doesn't lie.
"We know if we had put a lot of our chances away when we were on top, when we have had the momentum in games, the league table would have been a lot different.
"We ended up down in the bottom half of the league because we didn't do that.
"It was a season of missed chances and that's frustrating."
