Former York keeper Ovendale loses fight

Former York City goalkeeper Mark Ovendale has died at the age of 37 following a battle with cancer. Ovendale played 44 times for the Minstermen and also spent time with Northampton Town, Bournemouth and Luton Town during his 181 Football League appearances.He actually began his career at non-league Wisbech and similarly featured for Barry Town, Tiverton Town, Carmarthen Town and Newport County.The Leicester-born keeper later coached at Wimborne Town, where he even managed a few more games."We are all deeply shocked. Our thoughts go out to his family," chairman Ken Stewart told Wimborne's official website."Mark came to us as goalkeeping coach, he was very professional and well liked, and his work helped put us on the road to our eventual promotion."
