York set to sign Smith

Forest Green Rovers midfielder Jonathan Smith is expected to join York City after both clubs agreed a small compensation fee for the highly-rated 23-year-old former Morecambe schemer. Preston-born Smith netted eight times in 46 appearances for the Gloucestershire part-timers last term and is set to reunite with his former playing colleague Alex Lawless at Bootham Crescent.  "To leave Forest Green is the hardest decision I have ever had to make," he told the Stroud News & Journal.  "I am sad to leave, but York is close to my Preston home and with Conal (Platt) leaving the thought of travelling two and a half hours on my own would have been hard."  The Minstermen were also understood to be keen to recruit former Republic of Ireland under-19 international winger Platt.  However, he appears ready to shun them and similar approaches from Mansfield Town and Wrexham in order to join Cambridge United.  "I was looking to stay on and the reprieve from relegation made my decision difficult, but no disrespect to Forest Green, Cambridge are a big club and the money and offer of a two-year deal was just too good to turn down," Platt confirmed.      Jonathan Smith - Set for York      Conal Platt - Expected to join Cambridge
