York impress against Sunderland

York City produced an impressive display despite going down to their first pre-season defeat against Premier League outfit Sunderland at Bootham Crescent. Phil Bardsley and Oumare Tounkara helped the Wearsiders towards an interval lead, but their opponents responded well and substitute Jamie Reed calmly despatched a second-half penalty in reply [pictured right]. The Minstermen also struck the woodwork twice and had another clear penalty refused when recent signing Jason Walker was brought down in the area by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Defender Bardsley drove the visitors in front on eight minutes and Tounkara made it two just after the half-hour with another clinical finish, in front of a large five-thousand-plus attendance. In between times York striker Walker clipped the top of the crossbar with a rising effort before being sent sprawling in the box under the challenge of the keeper. But on this occasion no positive decision was forthcoming. His strike partner Liam Henderson also found the woodwork with a header while former Sunderland keeper Michael Ingham twice denied recent £6m signing Craig Gardner at the opposite end either side of the interval. But Reed cut the lead from the spot after being fouled by Titus Bramble on 64 minutes, and the bright hosts continued to threaten through the lively Reed again and fellow replacement George Purcell before Ingham saved well from Craig Lynch late on.York City: Ingham, Oyebanjo, McGurk (Parslow 63), Smith (Fyfield 63), Meredith, Kerr (Adriano 63), Boucaud, McLaughlin (Potts 63), Walker (Chambers 58), Henderson (Reed 58), Blair (Purcell 58)subs (unused): MusselwhiteGoals: Reed (pen 64)Sunderland: Mignolet (Carson 46), Ferdinand (Laing 83), Bardsley (Adams 73), Turner, Bramble, Cattermole (Reed 80), Malbranque (Elmohamady 62), Gardner (L.
