York City 1 Scunthorpe United 0

York City striker Richard Brodie lashed in a tremendous late winner to inflict a first pre-season defeat on Championship side Scunthorpe United at Bootham Crescent. The Minstermen dominated for long stages against their higher-ranked opponents, but appeared set to be left frustrated until second-half substitute Brodie eventually broke the deadlock just before the end. Scunthorpe had earlier opened in purposeful fashion and striker Jonathan Forte forced an important block from York's trialist goalkeeper David Knight. The ex-Darlington shot-stopper also denied Bobby Grant after former Iron striker Michael Rankine had gone close with a header from an inviting George Purcell cross at the opposite end.But it was the home side who soon took charge after the break and substitute Jonathan Smith's header was superbly kept out by visiting goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.Slocombe then had to save a Brodie free-kick and York left-back James Meredith also flashed a shot narrowly wide as the hosts continued to search for a winner. And it deservedly arrived with just a couple of minutes remaining when Brodie crashed a brilliant 20-yard free-kick into the top corner to round off another impressive display.York City: Knight, Courtney, McGurk, Sangare, Meredith, McDermott, Mackin, Lawless, Carrurthers, Rankin, Purcellsubs: Smith, Parslow, Till, Gash, Brodie, McWilliams, Ingham, Richardson, DarvillScunthorpe United: Slocombe, A.
