Trialist David McDermott netted a late winner as York City claimed their first pre-season victory against Morecambe at Bootham Crescent. The former Kidderminster Harriers winger struck home an 80th minute free-kick to earn a deserved win for the home side, although he was helped by a poor bit of goalkeeping from Barry Roche. Roche had earlier been kept busy during an opening half in which the Minstermen dominated against last season's second division play-off semi-finalists.York's main danger man Richard Brodie struck a post and also had strong claims for a penalty turned down as Morecambe were forced to  work hard to keep their opponents at bay.The action proved rather disappointing after the break, however, as both sides made a number of changes and the flow of the game thus became seriously affected. And it was one of those replacements McDermott (inset) won it late on as his 20-yard free-kick slipped through Roche's hapless clutches. There were welcome first starts of the season for York's David McGurk and Greg Young, while fellow defender James Meredith again got more valuable game time after knee surgery over the summer. York City: Ingham, Darville, McGurk, Young, Meredith, Lawless, Mackin, Smith, Till, Gash, Brodiesubs: Purcell, Barrett, Andrew, McDermott, Whitwell, McWilliams, Sangare, Parslow
