York City 1 Kidderminster Harriers 2

Individual errors cost York City in their opening day defeat to Kidderminster Harriers at Bootham Crescent. The Minstermen were always in trouble after goalkeeper Michael Ingham inexplicably allowed a Callum Gittings corner to sail over his head in the tenth minute. York striker Richard Brodie then proceeded to waste a number of  chances before substitute Michael Rankine (right) equalised from the penalty spot with only four minutes remaining. However, fellow replacement Duane Courtney shoved his former team-mate Chris McPhee inside the area a couple of minutes later and debutant Tom Shaw fired the winner from the spot. Both sides had earlier tried to play football the right way on a gloriously sunny afternoon, and shortly after Ingham's early howler former England under-21 international Lee Morris should have done much better as he sidefooted tamely at the York keeper.Alex Lawless was one of the hosts' better performers and soon had a fierce drive fended off by Daniel Lewis in the Harriers goal, while McPhee directed a shot straight at Ingham in reply before Brodie threatened either side of the interval - escaping his marker and firing straight at the keeper just before the break, and dragging a second opportunity wide of the mark following the restart.Brodie missed again with a headed opportunity after a cross from the right by Danny Parslow, while York's best player James Meredith  found substitute Peter Till and his delivery produced a first-time shot at the keeper from Michael Gash.Lawless then had another firm drive parried by Lewis before Rankine was brought down inside the area by Shaw as the contest entered its final five minutes. And once Rankine and Brodie had stopped arguing about exactly who would take the penalty, it was eventually Rankine who slotted home from twelve-yards.But clumsy defensive work from Courtney with a blatant foul on McPhee three minutes later gave Shaw the chance to win it for the visitors from the spot, which he duly managed despite a valiant attempt to save from Ingham.
