York City slipped to a narrow defeat against Championship newcomers Hull City in their pre-season opener at Bootham Crescent. A single header from Gabonese striker Daniel Cousin following a late free-kick delivered by Hungarian international Péter Halmosi was all that eventually separated the two sides in front of a two-thousand-plus attendance. Without a number of key defenders, York boss Martin Foyle named an experimental line-up that included a couple of trialists in addition to four untried youngsters.Dean Lisles slotted in at right-back after new signing Duane Courtney was rule out with injury, while fledgling trio Jamie Hopcutt, Jonny Andrew and Tom Richardson were named amongst the substitutes.Trialist former Kidderminster Harriers winger David McDermott started the game, and  ex-Morecambe goalkeeper Steven Drench was handed his chance after the break.Debuts were given to three summer signings in Peter Till (above), George Purcell and second-half substitute Jonathan Smith, although central defenders David McGurk and Greg Young were both missing due to injury.Leading scorer Richard Brodie and his regular strike partner Michael Rankine were brought on following the interval as manager Foyle made full use of his available resources, while James Meredith was also an unexpected  later participant after undergoing knee surgery over the summer. However, the contest was eventually settled with only ten minutes remaining when substitute Cousin headed the winner from fellow replacement Halmosi's delivery.
