Barnsley striker Andy Gray struck twice as York City were defeated 2-0 in their pre-season friendly at Bootham Crescent. Former Leeds United marksman Gray opened the scoring when receiving a pass from Stephen Foster on 37 minutes before turning sharply and drilling home in excellent fashion. He then added an impressive second when his header from Iain Hume's cross midway through the second-half caught the inside of an upright on its way into the net.And it could have been three late on when only a fine save denied Tykes winger Martin Devaney.York included three trialists within their starting line-up and weren't without chances of their own.Recent signing George Purcell and Michael Rankine (right) both forced instinctive saves from Luke Steele before the break and Danny Parslow headed over a cross from newcomer Jonathan Smith after it.York City: Drench, Darville, Sangare, Parslow, Meredith, McDermott, Lawless, Smith, Carruthers, Rankine, Purcellsubs: Gash, Barrett, Brodie, Mackin, Lisles, McWilliams, Hopcutt, Andrew, Richardson, Whitwell, KnightBarnsley: Steele, Hassell, McEveley, Shackell, Doyle, Foster, Hume, O'Brien, Lovre, Devaney, Graysubs: Preece, Hammill, Dickinson, Adam, Butterfield, Potter, Noble-Lazarus, Branson, Fearnehough, Taylor, Bennett, BouldingRef: M.
