York City have appointed Tamworth boss Gary Mills as their new manager in succession to the recently departed Martin Foyle. The 48-year-old will be joined at Bootham Crescent by his long-time assistant Darron Gee. Northampton-born Mills actually began his professional career under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest and was famously a member of their 1980 European Cup winning side when aged only eighteen. He later had spells with Seattle Sounders, Derby County, Notts County and Leicester City before moving into management with Grantham Town, King's Lynn and Tamworth. Mills then left to join the coaching staff at Coventry City in July 2002 and was appointed Notts County manager eighteen months later. However, he was unable to save them from relegation and was dismissed after only ten months at the helm. But he was soon back in management at Alfreton Town before joining Tamworth for a second spell. Again he suffered the disappointment of relegation before immediately steering the club to the Conference North title the following season. Since then he has stabalized the Lambs into a solid and competitive outfit at the higher level."We are very pleased to welcome Gary Mills to York City Football Club. Gary is a highly regarded manager and has extensive experience of Conference football and knows what is required to succeed in this league," York chairman Jason McGill told the club's official website."We appointed Gary because of his considerable football knowledge and his enthusiasm and drive as a manager to replicate his successful playing career," he continued. "We are also pleased to welcome assistant manager, Darron Gee to the Club. Gary and Darron have a great working relationship and Darron will be assisting with coaching and scouting duties. They are a strong team who will help us to achieve the playing success we all desire."
