Leaders Plymouth bounce back with victory at York

League Two leaders Plymouth bounced back from successive cup defeats to win 2-1 at struggling York.

Jake Jervis' 10th goal of the season and a Graham Carey effort secured the points as the Minstermen slumped to a fifth straight defeat despite Ben Godfrey's consolation in the ninth minute of stoppage time, added on due to a serious injury to home defender Dave Winfield.

During a one-sided first half, Plymouth forged in front after 19 minutes when Carey's cross from the left was converted at the near post from five yards by Jervis.

The Pilgrims then doubled their advantage in the 44th minute with Gregg Wylde providing the cross and Carey beat home goalkeeper Scott Flinders with a first-time strike from 15 yards.

Despite former Manchester United midfielder Jonathan Greening being introduced by the hosts at half-time after being re-registered as a player, Derek Adams' men continued to threaten most with Carey calling Flinders into action at his near post and then hitting the top of the crossbar from out on the right flank.

Top scorer Jervis also poked wide after being played through the left channel by Carey.

Teenage midfielder Godfrey fired in a 10-yard shot to score his first senior goal following David Tutonda's trickery, but it was too little, too late for York.
