Cook's men top League Two

Chesterfield capitalised on Scunthorpe's draw last night by moving to the top of League Two with a convincing 2-0 win at York.

The visitors made the best possible start and opened the scoring after two minutes with Eoin Doyle collecting Gary Roberts' through ball and finding the top corner following David McGurk's error.

Chesterfield almost doubled the lead moments later but Nick Pope saved expertly from Roberts before Tommy Lee denied York's Lanre Oyebanjo with a fine save.

The pressure finally told on the hosts with the Spireites doubling their lead through Roberts in the 39th minute. It was a classic counter-attack from the visitors with Dan Gardner breaking and teeing up Roberts who slotted the ball home.

Paul Cook's team almost put the game out of sight five minutes after the restart as Roberts picked out Doyle but he could only shoot at Pope.

Josh Carson went close for York in the closing stages as they looked to reduce the deficit but Chesterfield held strong as they took top spot.
