Pools pick up first point

Hartlepool collected their first point of the new SkyBet League Two campaign following a 0-0 draw at York.

The visitors were left feeling aggrieved early on after their penalty claims for a foul on Steve Howard by Lanre Oyebanjo were waved away with the referee instead awarding a free kick on the edge of the area.

It was not until the midway point of the first half when York threatened for the first time as Tom Allan beat goalkeeper Scott Flinders to the ball only to see his header scrambled off the line by Neil Austin.

Prior to the break Colin Cooper's men went close with James Poole's angled drive going across the face of Michael Ingham's goal.

Both sides traded chances in the second half with Oyebanjo and Ryan Jarvis forcing efforts for York before Jack Compton blazed wide from a swift counter-attack for Pool.

Andy Monkhouse then went close in the closing minutes but Chris Smith was on hand to clear his header off the line and away from danger.
