Walker aims to fire York to the top

Latest signing Jason Walker believes York City have the potential to go all the way this season after joining them from title rivals Luton Town. The Minstermen narrowly missed out on the play-offs last time around after being defeated by Oxford United in the final the previous year. And now their ambitious manager Gary Mills has turned to former Barrow marksman Walker to fill the considerable void left by the prolific Richard Brodie's departure to eventual champions Crawley Town nine months ago.Walker, 27, has scored 38 goals over the past couple of seasons but never really settled at Luton. He missed a penalty during a shoot-out in their play-off final defeat to AFC Wimbledon last month.“Luton are a big club but so are York. The club has a long Football League history too and this is nowhere near a backward step for me," Walker told The Press. “I want to play regular football and the manager has promised to give me a good shot at that.“I didn’t play as many games as I wanted to at Luton but played more matches towards the end of the season under the new manager. It wasn’t that I wasn’t wanted at Luton but this move felt right and the manager [City boss Gary Mills] told me I should go with my gut instinct so I had to come here.“I know we have a good footballing team and that the club have done well since the manager took over, almost getting in the play-offs," he added. "I thought they were a really good side when Luton played here at the end of last season but I knew that anyway."I wouldn’t have come here if the manager was talking about being a mid-table team. His ambition and the players that he is signing speaks for itself. He’s aiming to be near the top of the league and I think we can be.”  The arrival of Walker in a reported £60,000 deal takes Mills' recent recruitment number to five after strikers Ashley Chambers and Liam Henderson were joined by Kidderminster Harriers winger Matty Blair and veteran Lincoln City goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite. But he won't be stopping there with more new signings planned as York look towards the top in what will be their eighth successive season in the Conference.
