McLaughlin keen to keep his place

York City midfielder Patrick McLaughlin is determined to keep his first-team place, despite intense competition in a side hitting top form.

McLaughlin scored twice in Saturday's 6-2 thrashing of Braintree, and is keen to keep up his form at Southport.

"Everyone's hungry, competition is good for the side, it can only improve the team," he told BBC Radio York.

"You know that one slip-up, one bad performance, and you might not be playing the next week."

McLaughlin also set up Ashley Chambers for the first goal against Braintree, as York hit six goals in the league for the first time in 26 years.

Despite that, McLaughlin knows that Southport, who won 3-0 at Newport on Saturday, will offer a stern test.

"We've got to start again, it's not about what anyone else does, it's what we do," he added.

"When we're on our game I don't think there are many teams than can stay with us, so hopefully we can go and get another three points."
