York have appointed former Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara as their new manager after the departure of Russ Wilcox.

McNamara takes over with the club 22nd in Sky Bet League Two after taking just two points from their last eight games.

The former Celtic and Scotland defender will be joined at Bootham Crescent by former Scotland team-mate Simon Donnelly, who becomes his assistant for a third time.

McNamara began his managerial career with Partick Thistle and the club were second in the Scottish First Division in January 2013 when he left to take the vacant position at Dundee United.

The 42-year-old parted company with the Tannadice side in September after a poor start to the season.
