Former Morecambe goalkeeper Steven Drench is joining York City for a pre-season trial with a view to providing a regular understudy for current number one Michael Ingham. The 24-year-old played for the Morecambe side that defeated the Minstermen in their play-off semi-final three years ago, although he was carried off after a heavy collision with York striker Clayton Donaldson in the lead up to Steve Bowey's penalty. Morecambe still came out on top on that occasion, but his injury forced Drench to miss out when the Shrimps defeated Exeter City at Wembley in the final to claim a place in the Football League.Since then he has been turning out for Southport, Cambridge United and Leigh Genesis.Drench (right) will be joined at Bootham Crescent by ex-Darlington goalkeeper and fellow trialist David Knight, who appeared for Blue Square Premier rivals Histon last term. Meanwhile, 30-year-old one-time Notts County, Bradford City, Grimsby Town and Macclesfield Town midfielder Paul Bolland will also hoping to impress when York open the pre-season programme at home to Hull City this weekend.Former Kidderminster Harriers winger David McDermott completes their current list of hopefuls that manager Martin Foyle will be carefully running the rule over.
