Former chairman Batchelor is dead

The death has been announced of 51-year-old former York City chairman John Batchelor. He died in Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. Batchelor was appointed chairman at York in March 2002 in succession to Douglas Craig.His background earlier consisted of the British Touring Car Championship scene, but his reign at York was to prove a disaster as they lurched on the edge of extinction.Eventually the club were forced into administration and only saved by their supporters.However, Batchelor wasn't finished and later tried to take over at a number of other clubs, including Mansfield Town, Accrington Stanley, Southampton and Chester City.He lived in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and his death has been reported as due to liver disease caused by alcoholism.
