Southampton 3-0 Yeovil: Report

08 March 2011 22:39
Barnard at the double A Lee Barnard double and a long-range Alex Chamberlain strike helped promotion-chasing Southampton to a 3-0 win over an under-par Yeovil side. Saints dominated throughout and deservedly led after 15 minutes when Barnard reacted quickest to Danny Butterfield's quickly-taken free-kick and fired past Stephen Henderson from six yards. Yeovil barely made any progress into the Southampton half of the pitch, with long-range efforts from Dean Bowditch and Andrew Williams the sum total of their best attacking efforts. Saints deservedly doubled their lead on 55 minutes with Adam Lallana the architect as he jinked past two Yeovil defenders on the right-hand edge of the box, before pulling back an inch-perfect cross back for the onrushing Barnard to head home from six yards. And the result was wrapped up in emphatic style on 67 minutes when the impressive Chamberlain - a thorn in the side of Yeovil's defenders all night - thumped a long-range effort which beat Henderson with the aid of a deflection.
