Pools see off Glovers

Mick Wadsworth enjoyed a winning start as caretaker manager of Hartlepool as a stunning goal from Andy Monkhouse sealed a comfortable 2-0 victory at Yeovil. The visitors started well but it was Yeovil who came closest to scoring in the early stages when Dean Bowditch headed wide from six yards after good work from Andy Williams. Hartlepool, who saw director of sport Chris Turner resign this week, took the lead on the half hour when an inswinging corner from Evan Horwood was headed home by defender Gary Liddle. Pools began the second half brightly, with Joe Gamble coming close from 12 yards before Monkhouse doubled their advantage after 54 minutes. The winger collected the ball 20 yards out and smashed an unstoppable shot past John Sullivan. Yeovil`s response came from Bowditch but his 20-yard drive was well-held by Scott Flinders. He came even closer in the 81st minute, firing wide from close range from an Andy Welsh cross, but Hartlepool held on.
