Chairboys miss out on Johnson

Wycombe Wanderers boss John Gorman has revealed that he has missed out on the signing of veteran striker Tommy Johnson to Championship side Sheffield United.

Gorman was hoping to bolster his struggling forward line with the 34-year-old veteran hitman after he was handed a free transfer by Championship strugglers Gillingham last week having been told he is no longer in the plans of boss Stan Ternent.

He looked set to be moving to Wycombe to join up with Gorman, having worked with him at Gillingham earlier in the season, but Blades boss Neil Warnock has made a late raid for Johnson.

The former Aston Villa and Celtic striker, who has scored over 150 goals in his career, made a name for himself under the guidance of Warnock at Notts County in the early 90s and seems to have opted to link up with him again in a bid to fire the Blades into the Premiership.

"We're talking to top quality players," Gorman told the club's official website.

"Unfortunately Sheffield United came in at the last for Tommy but I'll keep on looking and we'll see what happens."
