Wood settles top-of-table clash

Sam Wood's opening-minute header moved Wycombe up to second in League Two, leapfrogging their opponents Shrewsbury after a 1-0 win at Adams Park.

Wood's goal after just 40 seconds proved to be the winner as Wycombe closed out the victory with a resolute second-half showing.

Shrewsbury barely had a touch before they were behind when Wood met Nico Yennaris' cross to head past Jayson Leutwiler for his fifth of the season.

And it was almost two moments later when Fred Onyedinma's 20-yard drive was tipped over the bar by the busy Shrews stopper.

The visitors were struggling to impose an attacking threat and Tyrone Barnett's 42nd-minute drive straight at Matt Ingram was their only effort in the opening half.

A triple substitution sparked life into Shrewsbury though and a close-range block from Ingram stopped James Collins levelling the game shortly before the hour mark.

Leutwiler was in action again to save from Paul Hayes before substitute Aaron Holloway's late strike came back off the bar as Wycombe looked to cap off the win.
