Wycombe 1-0 Gillingham: Match Report

03 January 2011 17:39
Winfield ends Gills' winning run Dave Winfield scored the only goal as Wycombe kept their promotion push on track with victory against previously in-form Gillingham. It brought to an end the Gills' excellent recent run of five straight wins as they failed to avenge the 3-0 defeat that relegated them from League One last May Gillingham almost scored inside the second minute when Matt Lawrence got on the end of Curtis Weston's long throw but could only blaze over after using his chest to control. Wycombe's best chance of a dull first half came when Ben Strevens was unable to direct his header from Stuart Beavon's deflected cross on target. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, when a Matt Bloomfield corner was headed against the crossbar by Scott Rendell and defender Winfield nodded in the rebound from close range. The Gills came within a whisker of equalising with 16 minutes left when substitute Luke Rooney played in Cody McDonald, whose looping effort came back off the bar.
