Hayes helps Chairboys march on

Paul Hayes' third goal in four matches helped Wycombe extend their unbeaten Sky Bet League Two run to seven games as they saw off Cambridge 1-0 at Adams Park.

The in-form ex-Scunthorpe striker netted just after the hour mark to maintain the hosts' place in the automatic promotion places and condemn the U's to their third consecutive defeat.

After a slow first half, Wycombe should have gone in front before the break but Sam Wood could not collect Hayes' pull-back cleanly enough before goalkeeper Chris Dunn pounced to smother.

Cambridge reacted after the break and Harrison Dunk almost put them ahead immediately, firing just past the far post from a tight angle.

The hosts were quick to respond, though, and Matt McClure thought he had headed the opener from Wood's cross only to see it cannon back off Dunn's right-hand post.

But the home support did not have to wait long for the eventual winner, with Hayes converting his 100th career league goal from close range after Dunn had saved Paris Cowan-Hall's initial header.
