Chairboys unseated by Pilgrims

Plymouth underlined their promotion credentials with a 2-0 win at high-flying Wycombe as goals from Lewis Alessandra and Peter Hartley ended the hosts' 12-game unbeaten run.

Victory would have moved the Chairboys back to the Sky Bet League Two summit but instead the three points lifted the Pilgrims into the top six.

Alessandra opened the scoring 19 minutes in, charging into the box and beating Matt Ingram at his near post after being released down the right by Drew Talbot.

The striker was causing chaos again 10 minutes later when his low effort was palmed behind by Ingram and, from the resulting corner, an unmarked Hartley volleyed home at the back post to double their lead.

Sam Wood's 35th-minute header - expertly tipped over by Luke McCormick - was the closest Wycombe came to scoring, but Olly Lee then hit the base of the post as Plymouth went in at half-time well worth their two-goal advantage.

It did not get any better for Wycombe after the break, Reuben Reid somehow failing to make it three from a yard after Lee's shot was tipped onto the bar.

Hogan Ephraim almost forced home Fred Onyedinma's 59th-minute header, but in truth the off-colour Chairboys were well beaten.
