Accrington beat Wycombe to strengthen promotion push

Accrington's promotion push continued as centre-back Mark Hughes grabbed his first goal for the club in a 1-0 victory at Wycombe.

Stanley are now only one win away from a guaranteed place in the third tier for the first time in the club's history as they extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.

The Chairboys should have taken the lead with less than five minutes gone when centre-half Aaron Pierre fired a bullet shot over the crossbar from close range.

But Wycombe had debutant goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist to thank for keeping them in the game in the early stages as the Aston Villa loanee made a string of fine saves to deny Josh Windass and Brad Halliday.

Accrington eventually made the all-important breakthrough after 78 minutes when Windass' free-kick was tipped on to a post by Siegrist and Hughes was there to tap in from five yards.

A wave of late Wycombe attacks put the visitors under pressure but Ross Etheridge was calm and collected in the Accrington goal to prevent any late upset.
