Winning start for Wycombe

Wycombe made a winning start to life in League Two with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Morecambe. Debutant Scott Rendell's cool first-half penalty and substitute Jon-Paul Pittman's late solo goal handed Gary Waddock's men the points. Kevin Betsy and Lewis Montrose both went close early on for the Chairboys, before Morecambe's Adam Rundle was denied one-on-one by Nikki Bull. Rendell somehow headed Betsy's cross wide from seven yards, but he made amends by putting Wycombe ahead from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Matt Bloomfield had been tripped in the box by Chris Shuker. Ben Strevens curled a 20-yard shot against the crossbar and Betsy was denied one-on-one by the legs of goalkeeper Barry Roche as Wycombe turned the screw. Morecambe improved after the break, and Phil Jevons headed wide before Rundle and Shuker smashed fierce half-volleys narrowly past the post. But substitute Pittman sealed the win for the home side six minutes from time when he cut in from the right and curled a sublime left-foot shot past Roche from 25 yards.
