Chairboys undone by Thorton late show

28 August 2010 18:30
Kevin Thornton grabbed a late spot-kick equaliser to earn Northampton a point with a 1-1 draw against unbeaten Wycombe, who looked to be heading for all three for so long. Wycombe had led through an Andy Sandell's first-half opener but Thornton popped up to equalise from the penalty spot. Thornton went close in the first half and Billy McKay forced Nicky Bull into a smart save as Northampton sought their first win of the campaign. But Sandell, who had earlier scraped the post with a free-kick, gave Wycombe a 39th-minute lead with a superb dead ball effort from the edge of the area. After the break Scott Rendell and Ben Strevens should have doubled Wycombe's advantage but both missed the target from close range. Northampton then produced a late surge. Thornton had a shot blocked, as did Abdul Osman, before Andy Holt was tripped in the box by Gareth Ainsworth in the 87th minute and Thornton scored from the ensuing penalty.
