Ainsworth 'proud' of dominant Wycombe

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth insisted that the focus should be on the football rather than an unsavoury late incident after seeing his side beat Gillingham 1-0 at the Priestfield Stadium.

Matt McClure's 85th-minute goal was just reward for Wycombe's dominance, but in the dying seconds visiting keeper Jordan Archer was stopped from taking a goal-kick by a Gillingham fan who jumped on him. Stewards dealt with the culprit and having won eight of the last 12, Ainsworth preferred to focus on his side's impressive display.

He said: "He (the fan) will be dealt with by Gillingham and the authorities. I want to concentrate on the football really, what he did was wrong and he's given the rest of the Gillingham fans a bad name and they'll be as annoyed as anyone. I don't think it hurt the keeper. Jordan's a tough lad."

He added: "We could have had two or three goals if not more. To come to a place like Gillingham and we were up for it, ready for it.

"I was a little bit worried that we would be a bit rusty with no games for 16 days but those worries were soon put to bed when I saw the lads come out. The passion, the drive and the energy was awesome from the boys.

"The boys were outstanding, every single one, and I'm so glad Matt scored. He missed that one chance but that's his one a season. We had chances and (were) unfortunate not to be ahead earlier but we scored at a great time. I'm really proud."

The defeat cost Gillingham the chance to leapfrog Port Vale and move back top of npower League Two, and Martin Allen admitted his side's home form was a concern.

"We are finding it difficult. Let's not hide, we are finding it difficult to get the wins at home and playing for 95 minutes. That's something we need to deal with," said Allen, who condemned the late incident.

"In the second half we didn't play well enough, we were far too open. On the counter-attack they looked very dangerous and it was a disappointing second half all-round."

On the fan incident, Allen added: "As a football club we can't condone (what happened). None of us are happy with that. Our supporters have been fantastic but for one person to do something like that is crazy. I'm sure when he wakes up he'll be shocked, disappointed in himself. It's not a true reflection of the club since I've been here."
