How did they qualify - Stage 2 of the qualifying rounds saw Iran part of group 1 which they topped with a 3 point lead over the opposing teams. After fending off Jordan, Qatar and Laos the team had to face Japan, Bahrain and Korea in which they came second place gaining entry to the finals and avoiding the play-offs of the FIFA world cup 2006, Germany.

In the past the team have had a rollercoaster ride of events, a few years of not qualifying and a few years of being knocked out at round one. The team have even been disqualified for refusing to play at a neutral site.
