Wolves hope over Iwelumo
21 Sep 2008 - 14:57:43
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is hopeful that the red card shown to hat-tick hero Chris Iwelumo during Saturday's 3-1 win over fellow high-fliers Preston North End will be rescinded
The Scottish striker claimed a hat-trick at Deepdale, but the gloss was taken off his afternoon when he was sent off for violent conduct after a foul on Sean St Ledger.
Wolves also lost goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to a stoppage-time red card when he brought down Neil Mellor in the penalty area.
"It was a strange afternoon for Chris," McCarthy told the club's official website.
"He played exceptionally well, scored a hat-trick and got the match ball and then got sent off!
"St Ledger has been in to see the referee to say that nothing happened and you can't get a better witness than that.
"All credit to him, he's been up against a player who's given him a real battle and has scored a hat trick and yet he's still gone in to see the referee.
"It was nothing, not a clash of heads, anything, and bearing in mind the witness is the other player involved I would hope the sensible thing will be done and it will get rescinded."
