Mick: Scoreline flatted them
28 Sep 2009 - 08:50:20
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy felt the scoreline in Sunday's 5-2 defeat at Sunderland flatted the home side.
McCarthy's side fought back from two goals down in the early stages of the second half at the Stadium of Light after a John Mensah own goal and strike from Kevin Doyle.
However, late efforts from Kenwyne Jones, Michael Turner and a Michael Mancienne own goal added what McCarthy felt was an unfair gloss to the final scoreline.
"I feel very proud of the performance," he said. "We had done everything to get back into the game.
"I said to the players: 'Do you think at 2-2 I should have taken a striker off and put another midfield player on and shored it up?' and they all said: 'No'.
"I'm pleased they said that because it was never going to happen.
"I thought we had the by game by the scruff of the neck at that point and could have won it.
"But it was their day."
