McCarthy thankful to substitute strikers
22 Sep 2010 - 10:17:57
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was disappointed that his side needed extra-time and the introduction of Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle to overcome Notts County in the third round of the Carling Cup.
Doyle scored twice in extra-time to help ensure a 4-2 victory, while also setting up Fletcher for his goal at Molineux.
McCarthy told the club's official website: "It needed Fletch and Doyle to come on.
"The squad that started should have played better, but Doyle and Fletcher will cause anyone problems. Late on in the game they also had the legs, as well as that bit of class.
"I would imagine anybody looking at me and my team would think I was a very lucky fella to have those two on the bench and that's how I feel as well. They did change the game for us.
"I didn't bring them on earlier because I thought we could win it with the players on the pitch and there were players who needed to play.
"I certainly didn't want to keep everyone here until after extra-time."
