McCarthy rues costly defeat
28 Feb 2010 - 10:36:41
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy was left to play the same old tune after seeing his side suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat in a crunch clash with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
The visitors twice struck the woodwork during the loss, which came courtesy of a Zat Knight goal right on the stroke of half-time.
McCarthy told the club's official website: "I'm becoming a long-playing record to say we played well and should have got something. But yes, I do think we should have had a point.
"Unfortunately playing well doesn't always get you points. The goal we conceded wasn't bad luck though, it was bad defending.
"We switched off just before half-time, letting them take a throw-in and then they have a chance and a corner and it ends up in the back of our net.
"It's a bad goal from our point of view, we've made mistakes.
"I'm not bemoaning my luck because if I'm not lucky I don't think we'd be in the Premier League, because we must have had a bit of good luck last year.
"How do you turn it around? You have to take your chances. We need to tighten up and we also need to score a goal.
"I said last week that if we keep playing like that we'll be okay.
"But I'd sooner be coming off feeling disappointed that we've not got anything, than coming off having been slapped which clearly we haven't.
"I'm pleased with the performance but it doesn't get us anything."
