McCarthy hopes for league lift
04 Jan 2010 - 09:28:00
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is hoping for a league lift following their FA Cup third-round victory over Tranmere Rovers.
Matt Jarvis was the star of the show for shot-shy Wolves after scoring the only goal of the game at Prenton Park on 77 minutes.
McCarthy is now hoping the morale-boosting win can lead to a Premier League improvement when his 16th-placed side take on fellow strugglers West Ham United and Wigan Athletic in their next two games.
"We needed a win," he conceded. "I don't know what winning will do for confidence but I know what losing would have done for it - it would have had a real adverse effect.
"I think we did that and for long periods of the second half were camped in their half and were deserved winners.
"The pitch was rock hard by the end of the game but the referee said credit to everybody that it was a good game of football. The conditions were difficult.
"It's probably unplayable by the end so it wasn't easy, but certainly on the second half I thought we deserved to win the game."
