McCarthy: No World Cup deals
14 Jun 2010 - 18:47:21
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy says that he will not be scouting out potential new signings during his time at the World Cup finals in South Africa.
McCarthy has already snapped up Anderlecht defender Jelle Van Damme and Burnley striker Steven Fletcher this summer and is not expecting to do any further business while acting as a TV pundit.
He told the club's official website: "I'm delighted with the two we've got in. I'm thrilled with those two. But I'm not going to the World Cup with targets in mind.
"I would be in the wrong to not already have them done.
"As regards the World Cup market, somebody told me Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is going there hoping his targets don't play well so he gets them cheap.
"I know what he means. If they play well, they'll be a lot more expensive, but he won't get them cheap.
"If they play exceptionally well and have great tournaments they will become more expensive. They will also get more interest in them.
"Like Roberto says, if you go there thinking you have two lined up and they have great World Cups, someone else is sniffing and someone else fancies them.
"That's just what they do, they put themselves in the shop window, or otherwise, I might add - it could go the other way."
