League One FTBpro PFA Fan Player of The Year Contender: Carl Ikeme - Wolverhampton Wanderers
It has been quite a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the Sutton Coldfield-born keeper who has finally returned and established himself with his parent club after a ten-year spell of going out on loan from Accrington to Doncaster, with a number of other clubs in between.
His clean sheet record is second to none, and has been a major factor behind Wolves’ title success, and the club’s chief executive Jez Moxey is confident Ikeme will be at Molineux for many years to come.
Moxey knew from day one that Wolves had unearthed a gem and recalls: “I remember Carl as a youngster playing in a reserve game against Villa and it was one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen anyone make.
"He was absolutely brilliant, and I've always said to anyone that he's an outstanding keeper,” added Moxey whose views are share by Ikeme’s teammate David Edwards who predicts that Ikeme is an England number one in waiting.
Edwards says: “Carl has been brilliant all season I really don’t think there are many better keepers in England. That might sound a bit much but I’ve played with Joe Hart and Wayne Hennessey and Carl is up there with them.
“He really has got everything, he’s so commanding and such a good shot-stopper and his distribution is good too. Wolves are very lucky to have him and I really think he could be a top England keeper one day or for Nigeria, whichever he decides.
“There’s no reason why he can’t be here for the next ten years and be at the top of his game. He’s always in the gym, he’s always doing extra work and he’s always watching DVDs of himself to see where he can improve, so he’s very meticulous.”
