Free-falling Wolves worry Mick
30 Nov 2009 - 07:56:31
Mick McCarthy admitted Wolves got exactly what they deserved from Sunday's disappointing 1-0 derby defeat at home to Birmingham City.
The home side failed to find a response to Lee Bowyer's early goal for the Blues and McCarthy pulled no punches after the final whistle.
Wolves have now collected just three points from the last 24 on offer and find themselves languishing in 19th place in the table.
"That was a hugely disappointing experience," said McCarthy. "Of course I didn't turn up here expecting to get beat 1-0 or to play as poorly as we did in the first half.
"I think Birmingham played well but we didn't compete as we normally do and today's result is worrying.
"It's not the same as losing to Chelsea and Arsenal because we expect to lose to them but we're expected to beat Birmingham at our place. We didn't do that and they deserved it. They were better than us today."
Meanwhile, McCarthy is anxiously awaiting news on Michael Kightly after the winger appeared to suffer a recurrence of an ankle injury which forced him to miss the opening months of the Premier League season.
"I just wanted to put Kights on," he added. "He's been bright and lively all week and, although I didn't think he was fit enough to start, we weren't getting the ball down and playing and I thought he might give us a lift which he did.
"Unfortunately he's got injured again at a time when he'd been playing well."
