    Delight as Doyle breaks duck

    21 Sep 2009 - 12:37:03

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy hopes Kevin Doyle can move on to great things this season after grabbing his first goal of the season in the 2-1 victory against Fulham on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international has struggled with injuries following his £6.5million summer switch from Reading to Molineux but looked to be back to his best against the Cottagers.

"It was brilliant for Kev, because he's a Premier League striker and a Premier League scorer," said an elated McCarthy.

"Unfortunately, he's had a hernia and he's never been up to speed and, even yesterday, he's been getting his fitness 'on the hoof' with training and trying to get the games in.

"So it was great for him to get his goal because that will help his confidence."

Meanwhile, the Wolves boss is hoping his side can use Sunday's three-point haul as a springboard to success, adding: "After the first 18 minutes last week at Blackburn, we were really poor, and I had a really negative press conference with everyone banging on at me.

"Now we've got seven points and we're 12th in the league. Roll on the Europa League! We've had nice solid start now, that's all.

"It looks a lot better than it did yesterday morning. If we'd have lost yesterday, it would have been awful, yet we won and it's a really solid start. It's amazing what three points can do isn't it?"
