Ailing Milijas backed to shine
18 Sep 2009 - 11:51:49
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has backed midfielder Nenad Milijas to eventually come to terms with the pace of the Premier League.
The 26-year-old Serbia international moved to Molineux from Crvena Zvezda in a £2.6million deal in the summer but has failed to impress so far.
McCarthy brought him off at half-time in last weekend's 3-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers but the Wolves boss is prepared to be patient with a player he believes will eventually be a Premier League star.
McCarthy said: "Nenad's just got to work through it. He's a good player. It was hard for him.
"He'd been away and played in a big game for his country against France. They look like qualifying for the World Cup, so I considered whether I should play him after he'd played and travelled.
"Then I thought - 'No, it's quite the opposite' because he equalised with a great penalty. But it just wasn't happening for him in the first half. He can still play though, he's still coming to terms with it.
"It's a different league altogether. We're having to scrap for everything at the minute. We haven't got that opportunity where we've got one player who can get him on the ball and link passes - we've got to scrap for things.
"It's difficult when every game is a battle. We haven't had a game where we've dominated, been stroking it around and picking passes.
"But we've seen Milijas do that. He's dominated games when we've watched him play."
