Wolves boss seeking flying start

Wolves will provide themselves with a priceless headstart if they can kick off next season in the same manner as they did this one, according to manager Mick McCarthy. The Black Country outfit oozed confidence from the start of their promotion-winning season in the Championship having won seven and drawn one of their opening eight league games. It was the best start to a season for Wanderers since 1949, and although McCarthy is not naive enough to think his charges will sweep aside all comers next season in the same way, he knows a positive start to the club's quest to avoid the drop will be crucial. "I doubt we'll do it as well as we did it this season," said the Wolves boss in the Express and Star. "It makes a hell of a difference to your self-belief and self-esteem. "If you're not bottom, you're not starting from two or three games in and you're not being questioned." And he added: "Maintaining that same level of calm about the place - whether we've won one or lost one - is important."
