Ward hoping for defensive success

Ward was recruited by manager Mick McCarthy as a striker in January 2007, but then went on to feature as a left-sided midfielder for much of his second season at the club. Last season's promotion-winning campaign featured a stand-out contribution from Ward at left-back - and it is in that role that the 23-year-old now believes could hold the key to his future success. "People would probably say I'm a left-back now and it's been a long time since I played up front," Ward told Wolves' official website. "It was a bit of a strange one at first and I was a bit nervous, but I ended up really enjoying it. "It was a case of being thrown in at the deep end the first time. The gaffer asked me to play there and while I was initially apprehensive after a couple of games I grew in confidence - it helped that we started the season so well and were playing some great football and were top of the league. "I played the majority of the season there in a team which got promoted. I think in modern-day football you have to be able to do a variety of jobs in different positions."
