The tactic repeated dividends as Wolves triumphed against fellow strugglers Burnley at Molineux 2-0 four days later as McCarthy reverted back to nine of the team which won at White Hart Lane.
But the move has been frowned upon by the Premier League, who have handed Wolves a suspended £25,000 fine.
McCarthy was reluctant to broach the subject at his press conferenceon Thursday ahead of Saturday's home meeting with leaders Chelsea.
But he did concede the action of the league will mean he cannot make the same drastic move again when choosing his side.
The former Republic of Ireland boss said: "I have accepted the fine. It is done with. I will not be appealing against it.
"I feel it has been dealt with, I have accepted it, the club have accepted it, and that is it finished with.
"Everyone else can have an opinion on it. Mine is, I'm absolutely glad it is done and dusted with.
"Where do you draw the line on changes? It is now open for discussion but not with me.
"Will I change 10 players again? I think you will find it isn't possible to do it.
"The discussion you need to have is with the Premier League about the parameters.
"Not too much affects my team selection - but the ruling has been put there.
"We'll have to see if anyone else does it but, come on, it's been put there as a deterrent. It has set a precedent and I've accepted it.
"I've accepted what has happened to me and so have the club. I am sure loads of people will have opinions but it is not for me."
Striker and record signing Kevin Doyle believes many Premier League clubs will face being fined if they repeat the action taken against Wolves.
He said: "They might end up fining a lot of teams over the next few years if they are going to go about it that way.
"If you are going start fining teams for changing teams for the FA Cup, League Cup, and when they go from the Champions League to playing in the Premier League, why is that any different for us?"
McCarthy admits he will be fielding an unchanged side against Chelsea following the fine performance in defeating Tottenham at Molineux eight days ago.
But there will have be a change amongst the substitutes as on-loan Chelsea player Michael Mancienne is ineligible to face his parent club.
