McCarthy takes positives from defeat

Mark Noble made the breakthrough in the 22nd minute when he sent a superb effort over Wayne Hennessey. Wolves battled away but were denied by Robert Green before Matthew Upson added a second in the 69th minute when he headed home Noble's corner. McCarthy said: "I thought we played well and gave a good performance but I want to win. I do not think we have that many lessons to learn. "What it did confirm is that when we play as well as that we have to take our chances and we have to score. "If there is anything to learn that just playing well is not enough. That is what we should understand. "West Ham went ahead with a quality finish and the England goalkeeper-elect (Green) has kept them in the game at the start of the second half. He did make some very good saves. "Then we don't mark from a corner after we'd had a really good spell. It was an awful goal to concede. "While that did did not kill the game completely, it made unlikely we were going to get something out of it." McCarthy looks certain to be without last season's top scorer Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for a spell after he suffered a hamstring injury. "It could be a few weeks," added McCarthy. "We won't know exactly until it settles down." Upson's goal was as much a shock to the player as it was to Wolves as he had scored only once in 76 previous appearances for West Ham. It came just days after the central defender spoke with boss Gianfranco Zola about increasing his goalscoring rate, and the Italian explained: "I am pleased with his performance and his goal. "In the week we have been talking about that. He said to me he would like to score more goals. "After today's match he came to me and said we have to talk more often. I said anytime. "He played well. I know he is a very good player. I am very happy to keep him. Hopefully he will stay with us." Zola would also like to see other midfielders follow Noble's example and improve their goal tally. He said: "That is one part of our game need to improve as we know that we can produce some good football. "We have to make sure goals come from other players, not just Carlton Cole. Today has been good. We scored two goals, one from a defender, one from a midfielder. "We were very professional. It was a good game for us. We gave them some chances but from our point of view we created so many opportunities to score. "I am pleased as it has been a good performance and a perfect way to start the season. The team looked in control of the game. When you are winning 1-0, something can happen and you obviously fear something like that. Fortunately the team was focused."
