McCarthy sets sights on cup run
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is desperate to break his team's winless streak - and sees no reason why that should not happen at Old Trafford.[LNB] McCarthy takes his side to face Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night having not tasted victory since the previous round more than a month ago, when they beat Notts County 4-2, and without a win in the league since the opening day of the season.[LNB]With that in my mind, the home of the cup holders would seem to be the worst possible destination for McCarthy's men, but he does not see it that way.[LNB]He said: "At this moment in time, wouldn't it be great for us to have a cup run?[LNB]"Everyone knows about the games we've got. We've just been beaten by Chelsea, we've got Man United in the cup, [Manchester] City in the league, United in the league then Arsenal in the league.[LNB]"So wouldn't it be great to have a victory of any sorts amongst all of those? And if it's going to be in the Carling Cup, let's have it."[LNB]There was some encouragement for Wolves this weekend as they turned in a good performance against league leaders Chelsea, even though they did eventually lose 2-0.[LNB]McCarthy said: "It isn't any consolation when you've been beaten, but the guys at Chelsea said we caused them as many problems as anybody this season.[LNB]"I think we handled them as well as most teams have done for most of the game.[LNB]"But that's scant consolation because we let two in and didn't score.[LNB]"But that's the level of performance that we have to have week in, week out.[LNB]"If we play like that against other teams we'll get results."[LNB]McCarthy will field a strong team for the match, but expects United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to alter the line-up that beat Stoke 2-1.[LNB]"Manchester United played yesterday, so I'm sure they'll make some changes," he said.[LNB]"It's quite unusual for anybody to play on Sunday then on Tuesday, it's strange."[LNB]McCarthy said that, despite the team's recent results, he is not concerned about his team losing faith in the way they play.[LNB]"We're not expected to get anything over the next few weeks against the teams we're playing," he said.[LNB]"But we don't go into those games feeling that way at all.[LNB]"If we get something out of them, that's fantastic.[LNB]"If we don't, it will make Bolton at home a big game, if it wasn't big enough already."
