McCarthy seeking confidence boost

Wolves turned in one of their most inept performances of the campaign in the 1-0 defeat by local rivals Birmingham at Molineux on Sunday.[LNB]They have now gone eight Barclays Premier League games without a win since mid-September and are four points adrift of the safety zone.[LNB]Wolves face a crunch home clash with fellow strugglers Bolton on Saturday and McCarthy is aware his side have to compete in a way they did not during the first half against Blues.[LNB]The former Republic of Ireland boss said: "We didn't start. We didn't get going. We didn't lay a finger on them or a boot on them.[LNB]"They were 1-0 up after three minutes and then it was really difficult to do anything about it.[LNB]"Confidence is a growing problem at the moment. You can watch it out there but you can't inject it into them though. There is no medication you can take.[LNB]"You can forget all the football. If we don't start and don't compete, like we didn't in the first half against Birmingham, then we've no foundation on which to build.[LNB]McCarthy decided to axe keeper Wayne Hennessey and replace him with Marcus Hahnemann and he was pleased with the performance of the former Reading player even though he was beaten after just two minutes by Lee Bowyer's deft chip.[LNB]He said: "I thought Marcus played really well. I felt we needed a bit of experience. Wayne has just had a tough couple of games and I had no problem with Marcus' performance at all."[LNB]Striker Kevin Doyle believes the two heavy defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea prior to the meeting with Blues may have had a negative impact on Wolves.[LNB]He said: "We just need to get a bit of confidence back. I think the two results against Arsenal and Chelsea have hurt us a bit and we need to recover from those.[LNB]"We are 13-14 games into the season so the Birmingham match was not the be all and end all but it was a massive match for us.[LNB]"It has been difficult for all of us but we have to forget about it and win next week.[LNB]"We have the players here. We had showed some good performances up until the last couple of weeks, drawing at Everton and against Aston Villa.[LNB]"We have the players here but we need to get ourselves out of this bad patch."[LNB][LNB]
