McCarthy: Rotation's all in the game

04 January 2010 16:03
The former Republic of Ireland coach came under fire when he rotated all 10 outfield players for the 3-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester United last month.[LNB]He made half a dozen changes for Sunday night's 1-0 FA Cup victory at Tranmere but feels he is not being treated the same as his Premier League counterparts, with United and Arsenal both sending out under-strength teams - with differing outcomes - in the third round.[LNB]"Was it six [changes]? Is everyone counting now?" said McCarthy.[LNB]"Everyone makes a lot of my team selection but I pick a team to win the games.[LNB]"If we have got a game Saturday, Tuesday in a cup replay and a big game the following Saturday, I might change my view on that.[LNB]"I might think about the [league] game like all these big-name managers do who never seem to be disrespecting any competition - only me... what a load of tosh that is eh?"[LNB]Wolves' match-winner at Prenton Park, Matt Jarvis, is hopeful the hard-fought victory over League One Tranmere will help boost league performances.[LNB]The midfielder scored the only goal 13 minutes from time - having missed a sitter from seven yards in the first half - to avoid an upset.[LNB]And after back-to-back league defeats, part of a run of six losses in their last nine matches, Jarvis insists they have to take as many positives as possible out of the Tranmere result.[LNB]"It's never nice losing two on the spin but it's a real morale booster to get a win," he said.[LNB]"Any win is great for confidence and we need that to go into the next game against West Ham (on Sunday).[LNB]"We feel we've been putting in really good performances without getting the right results.[LNB]"But last night we did and it's put us in a good frame of mind for the next game."[LNB]Jarvis scored for the first time since mid-April and he admitted it is an area of his game he has to improve on to help the fight against top-flight relegation.[LNB]"That is what I need to start doing and that's what I've been practising so I'm glad it paid off," the 23-year-old told the Birmingham Mail.[LNB]"I need to score more so picking one up last night will hopefully see me kick on."[LNB]Despite their cup exit, Tranmere manager Les Parry hopes his side can now focus on survival with the club precariously placed third-bottom of League One.[LNB]"We will probably dwell on this today but we need to concentrate on Gillingham (on Saturday) as our away form isn't fantastic and we need to address that," he said.[LNB]"That performance against Wolves was not from a team third from bottom of League One but we are third from bottom so we have got to get our fingers out, get some points and get up the league."[LNB][LNB] West Ham v Wolves.
